On a snowy morning, I wake up and silence covers the room. The piles of snow are probably absorbing any sounds. At times like that, I can hear "the sounds within silence". Maybe it is the sound of "stillness". I feel like the sound of stillness exists.
Jiang Xiao-Qing always performs wonderfully on my albums and in my concerts as a member of Li-Hua Ensemble. I have always felt "the changing of nature" through her sounds. The natural breaths that have different looks in each season. A world without limit extends from her timbres, embodied in the sounds of her Gu Zheng. It comfortably stimulates the listeners' imaginations.
As I composed I thought of particular performance techniques she has, and I wanted to create quiet feelings such as "a clear stream" and "the moon" in music. Or the blue sky in perfectly fine winter weather that somehow makes me feel sad. Because Jiang Xiao-Qing is an artist who can express those motifs in sounds. Her beauty is her timbres. Tenderness and grace, with dignity.
Jiang Xiao-Qing's timbres have expression in even the lingering of each sound. May her breath reach all of you. Please try listening carefully to "the sounds within silence".
