As soon as the intro of the opening number "Wanshima" starts, with her voice somewhat like a roar of a warrior, ANNA sweeps us away to a place we've never been before. It is a brand new world of Asian sound.
In her voice, lives the spirits of Amami Islands.
ANNA was born on the Amami Islands, floating in the East China Sea. She has been studying the island's "Shimauta" (island song) vocal techniques since the tender age of three. This is a traditional vocal technique, which has been handed down through generations. She has mastered this unique technique, and freely paints the colors of the spirits by singing effectively in falsetto. It is as if she is evoking ancient memories from the days before civilization.
Though it is almost impossible to describe her vocal expression with words, perhaps "prehistoric" may be a close one.
It is the voice of a pure spirit, fueled with instinct and life, before words were born.
In this new album, you can fully enjoy ANNA's rare vocal talents. Greg Mathieson, a respected musician in the L.A. music scene, took ANNA under his wings, and provided arrangements for the title song "Wanshima". World famous fashion designer Kansai Yamamoto is her wardrobe coordinator, and he is only one among many other famous Asian artists who lent their talented hands to confirm complete exposure of ANNA's allure.
